Board Meeting Minutes

  January 22, 2003

At 7:02 P.M. on January 22, 2003, the first football board meeting was held at Roy Getzoff’s office in Weston.

Members present: Roy Getzoff, Steve Epstein, Tommy James, Jim Mulcay, Vince Mundo, Larry Simpson,  Guy Tagliente, Bruce Walker, Kevin Williams,  and Tom Winston.

TOPICS   COVERED
1.  Association’s financial status was presented by Tag.

2.
Bruce received a check for $540 from Don Cifra to be distributed to attendees who took leadership roles in the state football clinic.

3.
Because there will be 46 schools to cover next season (up from the 38 we serviced last year), Bruce Walker suggested we send a letter to principals, requesting that they schedule some games for Thursdays and Saturdays, but unfortunately most schools have already fixed their game dates for next year.

4.
We could possibly lose four white hats for the upcoming 2003 season: Steve Beck, Richard Callura, Willie Roberts, and Bruce Walker.

5.
Vince Mundo said that we had 84 varsity officials last year, and that if we go from 14 crews to 16, we’ll have just one extra official.

6. We simply have to recruit new officials by such means as recruiting from junior colleges, youth league coaches who have stopped coaching, etc.

7.  Roy will assign certain officials to tutor white hats and other officials who may not be eligible next season because of test scores.

8.
Opinions were expressed as to who would take Don Cifra’s place next year.

9.
John Craven explained the 2003 meeting dates and what would take place on some of those dates.  The June 23 meeting date may be changed.

10.
Vince said that we must look at leadership abilities, not just the test score in choosing white hats.

11.
An e-mail will be sent to ALL evaluators to send in their evaluations by January 31, 2003, of officials they evaluated last season.

12.  More evaluations are needed.  Vince believes that an evaluator can also time games.  But some  in our group took umbrage to such an unfeasible suggestion.  Vince says evaluations are needed to quiet the grumbling officials who aren’t picked on a crew.  Vince then expatiated on how he derived at the final evaluation of an official.

13.
Because of a dearth of officials for the upcoming season, we need to allow officials who have finished two (?) or three years to be eligible to become varsity officials.  Also suggested- -for the 2003 pick meeting, each white hat must choose one of these first-year varsity officials.

14.
Larry Simpson talked about officiating philosophy such as advantage/disadvantage, meaningless foul calls, etc.

15.
Roy will assign leadership roles for the upcoming season.

16.
For upcoming spring jamborees, Vince wants white hats to do more evaluating than just refereeing games.

17.
Bruce talked about state title game they worked in Tallahassee.

18.
The meeting lasted a little over two hours.  Next meeting will be held at Tommy James’s house on Wed., Feb. 19, at 7:00 P.M.
