Board Meeting Minutes

  February 19, 2003

1.  The second Board Meeting began at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Tommy James’s house.

2.
Those present: Larry Simpson, Guy Taglienti, Steve Epstein, Terry Mc Evers, Roy Getzoff, John Craven, Kelvin Williams, Vince Mundo, Tom Winston, and Tommy James.

3.   Tommy James read the minutes of the Jan. 22 Board Meeting.

4.
Tag read the Treasury’s report and indicated that we have $3,617.57.  Of the amount $540.00 will be paid to state clinic clinicians.  Also, evaluators of last season need to be paid.

5.
Vince said that there will be very few out-of-country teams coming to the Broward County to play during the 2003 season.

6.
All of the new eligible varsity officials worked some varsity games last season.

7.   Vince listed six one-to-two-year experienced officials who he thought are competent to work varsity next year.  He also listed five varsity officials who failed the test last year.

8.
Vince said we need 16 crews plus 10 to 20 alternates.

9.
We need to have a crew pick in early August.  The newest not-so-known eligible varsity officials should come to the pick meeting and introduce themselves.

10.
Any J.V. white hat could be used to ref a seventeenth or eighteenth game on a Friday night- - beyond that, our association will not be able to service the game.

11.
Cifra told Vince that he had moved some Friday night games to Thursday.

12.
Roy is moving the general body meeting from June 23 to June 16 so local applications can be mailed out.  State applications cannot be mailed- - they must be personally picked up by the individual official.  Last year the notification of the first general body meeting was sent out on the internet, but some officials didn’t have computers, so they missed the first meeting.  It will cost between $50 to $60 to mail 135 local applications.

13.
Roy wants ALL officials who scored 80 or less on last year’s test to attend summer tutoring sessions + have on-field mechanics sessions, training them to be able to work any position on the field.

14.
Roy assigned Tom Winston to head up education; Larry Simpson to head up mechanics.

15.
Roy read out list of officials who have indicated an interest in becoming a white hat.  He also read letters from some of the wanna-bees.

16.
After much discussion about other-position officials moving to the white-hat position, Kelvin Williams emphasized that for the betterment of the association, these officials should become white hats.  Vince wants us to wait until after spring games before deciding on who will be the new white hats.

17.   Roy assigned:
Grievance
- - - Kevin Williams
Playoff  crews - - - Larry Simpson
Assignments - - - Steve Epstein
End of the year event - - - Kelvin will facilitate
Evaluations - - - John Craven

18.  The problem of how to train new officials was discussed.  The AYFL league may not allow brand new officials to work in the 2003 season.

19.
Tag will send out checks to clinicians and evaluators.

20.
After about 2½ hours the meeting was adjourned.

Very truly yours,
Tommy James, Secretary
