Board Meeting Minutes

March 11, 2004

  1. Meeting began at 7:17 P.M. at Roy’s house.

  2. Board members present were Guy Taglienti, Steve Epstein, John Craven, Tom Winston, Larry Simpson, Roy Getzoff, and Kelvin Williams

  3. The final meeting calendar has not been finalized yet.

  4. Failure of white hats not turning in evaluations could possibly result in losing an assignment losing points on his personal rating as an official.

  5. Roy suggested that crew members rate the official who works opposite him. Ex. R and U will rate each other.

  6. Officials who missed two consecutive meetings during the 2003 season will not be given spring games in 2004

  7. Steve said that FAU will have their spring game at Lockhart on April 17. We can have a booth there in order to recruit new officials. Steve has obtained a 100 - question NCAA video. "You Make the Call" will be the enticement method of getting potential officials. Roy said we have 185 officials in our association, and he does NOT want board members to work the booths - - he wants other officials to take leadership roles.

  8. Steve spoke with the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel. They will publicize our spring training sessions.

  9. Steve mentioned other methods of recruiting officials: using Damian, using teacher check stubs, and using officials to get their friends to become officials.

  10. Tag said we have about $3,200 to start off the year.

  11. To give the $3,200 back to the association members, suggestions were made to give everyone a whistle or a hat or a pencil or a pair of socks. SOCKS won out.

  12. Dr. Stewart e-mailed Roy and said he would strongly consider our association’s proposals such as increased travel fee, etc.

  13. Roy said that the pre-season state clinic for 2004 might be on-line.

  14. Roy suggested that officials who scored under 85 on the test last year could go on-line where 500 tests questions are presented. Taking those tests prove to be very beneficial.

  15. Roy suggested that Tom emphasize mechanics before rules knowledge during spring training sessions. Spring training sessions will be held at South Plantations on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  16. There was a unanimous agreement that COMMITTEES for next year be restructured.

  17. Business cards, (2,500 of them) will be made up to encourage people to become football officials.

  18. Meeting was adjourned at 8:57 P.M.

Very truly yours,

Tommy James, Secretary
