Board Meeting Minutes

April  7, 2004

  1. Meeting began at 7:32 P.M. at Tommy James’s house.

  2. Members Present: Larry Simpson, Tom Winston, John Craven, Steve Epstein, Vince Mundo, Roy Getzoff, and Tommy James.

  3. Issues that were presented to Dr. Stewart (FHSAA):

    a) Travel reimbursement for playoff- - State will pay 60¢ per mile, one way, for only one car.

    b) Playoff assignments - - State will poll coaches about eliminating neighboring county restrictions.

    c) Posting of playoff assignments- - Our association would like to see who’s working throughout the entire state.

    d) Format for Rules Clinic - - We want someone from our association to conduct the clinic, not someone from the state.

    e) Additional field markings - - State will consider putting a white restraining line around the field

  4. Vince said the State doesn’t know why there are discrepancies with our football exam scores. Consequently, some of our officials failed (?) the test.

  5. Tom said the training sessions for new officials will follow the same format as last year, BUT with more on-field training. Four-man & five - man mechanics will be taught.

  6. John said the following white caps have not turned in their crew evaluations as of yet: Buzard, Roberts, Ulysses Warren, and James Warren. Vince interjected that the turned-in evaluations are meaningless because most white hats are rating their crew members with all 4's and 5's.

  7. On Saturday, April 17, FAU will have their spring game at Lockart Stadium. We will have a booth there to recruit new officials. We will use a NCAA video so the prospective recruits can participate in YOU MAKE THE CALL.

  8. Vince said that about 35 to 40% of recruits that express interest in officiating actually end up actually becoming football officials- - the other fade away.

  9. There will be two more public and two more private high schools in the county for the 2004 season.

  10. Vince named a few 2-and 3-year officials whom the Board might consider moving up to Varsity. These officials will be rated during the spring jamborees. Note. It is our association’s custom to place deserving officials on Varsity after he or she has completed four years of officiating.

  11. Vince suggested that the 2004 banquet have a Western theme. He mentioned several venues.

  12. Vince will prioritize assigning alternates, and third & fourth round 2003 Varsity draft picks to work during the spring jamborees in order to give them exposure and allow varsity referees to evaluate them.

  13. Tom presented sections of the Constitution and By-Laws that might need to be amended.

  14. Meeting was adjourned at 9:23 P.M.

Very truly yours,

Tommy James, Secretary
