Board Meeting Minutes

May 12, 2004

  1. Meeting began at 7:00 P.M. at Tommy James’s house.

  2. Members present: John Craven, Steve Epstein, Roy Getzoff, Tommy James, Vince Mundo, Larry Simpson, Guy Taglienti, Bruce Walker, Kelvin Williams, Tom Winston.

  3. The state wants our 10 required educational plans for our association meetings to be structured differently than they were last year.

  4. The Board will recommend that the Nomination Chairman for this year be Tom Zace.

  5. Board position nominations will be held on September 27, 2004, Open discussion on October 12, and Elections on Monday, October 25.

  6. Constitutional changes will follow the same dates and procedures as #5 above.

  7. Fifty copies of State Registration forms will be brought to the first association meeting for officials who don’t know how to register on-line.

  8. John expatiated on how the 2003 REFEREE evaluations were determined. There was a great deal of discussion on what determines an official’s evaluation results.

  9. We need more evaluators. Each official needs to be evaluated at least two times.

  10. Steve related the mentoring program he went through as a rookie in New Jersey. We have sixteen crews. A rookie or second-year official would be assigned to a particular crew for the whole season. It may be difficult to implement the mentoring program because of a dearth of timers for the up-coming season.

  11. The State has stated it will pay 60¢ per mile, one way, for one car for post-season travel. It will pay for two cars if a 7-man crew + a timer works a playoff game.  However the FHSAA reimburses its employees 75¢ per mile, one way.

  12. An increase in travel fee for regular season games is not looking as promising as it did earlier, even though gas prices have skyrocketed.

  13. Ticket prices to watch a varsity football game are now $5.00.

  14. Signature Grand has failed to respond to requests about having our football banquet there. Roy suggested Bonaventure, saying we could probably get a 25% discount.

  15. Vince is assigning third and fourth picks from last year’s Pick meeting to work spring games.

  16. After much discussion, the Board decided unanimously that for the 2004 Pick meeting, each white cap will be allowed to keep 0 to 2 officials from his 2003 crew.

  17. Tom mentioned the success of the training sessions for new officials (we had about ten) who were trained at South Plantation in Tommy’s classroom. Those who took part in training were Ashley Carmichael, Steve Epstein, Matt Gallagher, Wesley Glassgow, Bill Hanlon, Tommy James, Terry McEvers, Tom Winston and Tom Zace.

  18. Vince said there will be about 90 varsity officials available for the 2004 Pick meeting.

  19. Meeting ended at 8:30 P.M.

Very truly yours,

Tommy James, Secretary
